“LOUGH CATTLE”

YOUTHS FROM ENGLAND. The class of emigrants on the Medic is mediocre (says a Fremantle message to the Sydney ‘ Sun,’ July 7). A section of tho youtlis who booked as emigrants, for Queensland proved rdost objectionable during the voyage. Travellers on tho vessel state that the youths must have been drawn from tho least intelligent of the population of England. “ Rough cattle ” was tho designation given them by a returning Australian, who stated that tho lads were inexperienced, and quite useless as national assets under existing circumstances. Ho declared that the youths were uncouth and foulmouthed, and their behaviour on the vessel had earned them an unenviable reputation.

This fact was borne out by an incident at Fremantle. Tho lads attempted to rush tho shore gangway, but several naval ratings interfered, and the youths were repulsed, suffering from sundry bruises.
