ST. CLAIR BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. About fifty members attended the annual meeting held in tho pavilion last night. Mr J. R. Rodgerson, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that tho membership still continued to be satisfactory. The losses during the year had been balanced by new enrolments, and within the last week four or five men had joined who would add to the playing strength. Bad weather had spoilt the season; but bowlers were optimistic, and hoped for a good, time in the coming season. The greenkeoper (Mr G. Shand) had devoted time, energy, and brains in purging the green into a splendid condition before the rainy weather set in, and be had promised to give as good a green again for the opening if the conditions were' favorable. The billiard table had been a valuable adjunct to the social life of the club, and its takings had averaged about £1 per week, and tho committee recommended that the balance of the debentures bo paid out of the first available funds. The debt on tho club’s property had been reduced by £IOO during the year. The croquet club bad turned out a success, and these ladies had paid the club £lO. Three members had died since the previous annual meeting—Mr James Gray, Mr John Ponsford, and Mr R, Cleland—and lie asked members to express their respect to the memory of their old members by rising for a minute. Tho meeting responded to the call.

Mr J. H. Hancock seconded the motion, and in doing so referred in detail to the help given to the club by the late Mr Gray when it was not financially strong. Mr Hancock also praised the work of the greenkeoper, saying: “Mr Shand is the one man of all the greeukcepers or supervisors whom I have mot who understands soils and grasses and manures. Evidently he has not been all his life a greenkeeper—be has been educated in this particular line,, and we are getting the benefit of it.”
