ABSENT-MINDED

SPORTING PEER'S LAPSE,

[Fhom Ode London Correspondent.]

. Juno 7. A famous sporting nobleman, now gathered to his illustrious ancestors, was incurably absent-minded in money affairs, The day came when he achieved a grand ambition—ho was made a Cabinet Minister. So ho suggested to his admiring colleagues of the Ministry a little celebration dinner at the smartest West End hotel of that now distant date. They ©lately accepted what they nnquestioningly regarded as a pleasant and hospitable invitation. There was a full assembly on the night. The dinner was first rate, the wines were choice, and the talk was delightful. The sporting nobleman sat at the head of the table—a perfect host—and to him in due course the head waiter delivered the hill. The genial host took a bit of small pencil from his pocket and did some rapid calculations. He then blandly announced that it worked out at just £4 11s each! With rueful smiles the disillusioned " guests ” forked out. Many months later came the cream of the joke. The hotel manager very delicately approached one of the company to know whether the sporting nobleman could be reminded of his little account!
