UNIVERSITY A BEAT UNIVERSITY B These teams mot on tiho Caledonian Ground yesterday afternoon. .Despite the slippery state of the field, the game was an interesting one to watch. Tho A’s played In blue and the B’s in blade. The former’s backs knew too much for the B’s, but the latter’s forwards put up a strong fight. •Soon after the start the ball came out from a scrum and went through the hands of Mac Lean, Fea, L. Gilberd, and Mackoroth to M'Donald, who had a clear run in. Harty converted. A strong tackle by R. Webb brought M’Donald down when another score seemed likely, and then M’Donald had his revenge by bringing R. Webb doum when ho had a good chance of scoring. Passing bv the Blacks saw Diack break away and kick, but Stewart beat him in his endeavor to regain possession. The Blues again invaded the B e territory, and the latter were forced three times. Borthwick, M'Donald, and IJart took part in a passing rush that was all but successful, M'Donald just missing tho hall after he had dribbled it across tlie Blacks’ lino.

Early hi tlio second spell M'Donald was nearly over after a good daslj down the left wing. Mackereth broke aivay and gave Hart a clear run in, but tho latter was overtaken and pulled down. C. Gilherd, behind tho Blacks’ scrum, made several openings, and they attacked strongly. There was some keen and' hard tackling on both sides. Soon after Mills was grassed a yard short of the goal posts. M'Gregor again narrowly missed scoring, being tackled at the corner by Richardson, who was hurt. In the second spell Southland forwards opened with an attack, but when tho Maori backs got tho ball they made ground with fine passing rushes. Bell and Mills were brilliant in defence, and Southland were forced. The Maoris carried most of the scrums, but in the loose play tho homo team had the upper hand, and from one assault which bowled over tho Maori defence R. Oughton kicked too hard, Bell forcing. For some time the Southland forwards kept up the pressure, and then a penalty relieved tho Maoris. The latter’s backs broke away, M'Gregor going out near tho corner. Richardson put in a fine lone-hnndled dribble for twenty yards, but Tnki saved well. Play worked back to tho centre, and then Mills beat the opposition badly, passing to Bell, who pierced the defence with a clever run and scored. Jacobs’s kick missed.
