YALE TELESCOPE OFFER
£IO,OOO ASKED FROM GOVERNMENT.

WELLINGTON, July 19,
Tho Premier was interviewed by a deputation from the New Zealand Astronomical Society with a request for Government aid to establish in Now Zealand tho valuable telescope offered by Yale University for observation work in tho Southern Hemisphere. Sir Robert Stout mentioned that the site would be selected by experts. Mr Massey asked if Control Otago would bo suitable,' and Sir Robert Stout replied that the Americans had approved it. The society wanted £IO,OOO from the New Zealand Government, and further sums could be raised in tho dominion to establish the observatory. Mr Massey .stated in reply that tho proposal appealed strongly to him, but ho did not want to commit the Government to any more expenditure than ho could help, as it would bo necessary to keep it in check for some time. He' thought tho Yale offer was one which should not be lost, and promised to make favorable recommendations to Cabinet.
