MONTHLY .MEETING,

Air J. ,S. ’ Douglas presided over the meeting of tho Drainage Board last night.

Mr F. W'. Mitchell asked if the cleaning nut of tho mud tanks was being done to time-table. Judging by tho accumulation in Custom-house square, it would seem that it was not.

Mr J. W. Dove asked tho chairman if lie remembered the instructions that had been given some time r.go to the engineer to prepare plans for a storm water drain in the- old Musselburgh Ward. Mr W. Begg, in reply, said he would make inquiries concerning the mud tanks. The matter of the drain for Musselburgh had evidently been ovetlooked, but ho asked Mr Dove to withhold any amendment until tho drainage mutter had been discussed, A MOTION LOST. Mr MacManus moved, in accordance with notice—“ That Mr Jacobsen bo instructed to attend committee meetings and adviso the committee on all matters in connection with tho pumping station.” The mover stated that from time to lime Mr Jacobsen had sent in adverse reports upon certain matters, bub these had Lad no effect. In connection with tho proposed installation of new pumping plant Mr Jacobson had also reported adversely. Under tho present system Mr Jacobsen claimed that tho class of pump was wwomr. Ho could quote a series of tilings whicli Mr Jacobsen had asked for. Tho voice of the practical mechanical'engineer Iml no)/ been heard; it had had to come through Mr M'Curdio Thu reason for his motion was that Mr Jacobsen might bo able to give guidance upon particular matters which he understood. Mr Lorvgwort-h seconded the motion, but suggested that tho words “ whan ■ required ” bo added. Mr Begg said Mr Jacobsen bad boon called to meetings in the past when his advice was particularly required. Do would bo sony for Mr Jacobsen if he had to attend meeting after meeting and very often not bo required to answer anything. Mr Taverner said lie saw no necessity for the motion, as tho board clearly had power to ask any of its officers to attend if he were required. XJxo motion was lost by 4 votes to 3.
