THE WAR MEMORIAL

POSITION OF CANVASS. FLOOD HINDERS WORK. A meeting of tho Finance Committee of the Dunedin War Memorial was held yesterday afternoon in Mr E. S. Wilson’s hoard room. There were present —Messrs J. Loudon (chairman), J. Inglis Wright, J. Wilson, C. H. Hayward, W. Begg, Dr Gordon M'Donald, and Rev. Bush King. Tho Chairman said that, bad luck seemed to dog their efforts in connection with tho memorial. The initial trouble was the delay in launching the scheme, which should have been started immediately after the armistice. The latest set-back had been caused by the floods. In the beginning of April they had_ organised a. complete system for canvassing the city, but the flood had so upset matters that collectors had found it very difficult to carry on the work. As they knew, it had been resolved at a large meeting recently held that only a personal appeal should be made to get the funds, and the difficulty the committee found was to get collectors to cover the city area. A number of ladies had worked splendidly, and the results for the last month had boon satisfactory. They were still a good deal short of their objective, and _ the only thing to do was to keep pegging away. There were quite a number of pairs who had undertaken to wait on business firms, but who had not carried out their undertaking. He made a special appeal to these gentlemen to endeavor to complete theii' canvass within the next week or so. Since the previous meeting tho following donations have been received: — Licensed Victuallers’- Association (£l4l 3s)-
