SOCCER

SOUTHERN v. MORNINGTON. The match between Southern and Momington at Culling Park provided a disappointing exhibition. The play of both teams was very patchy, and lacked connected movement. The sides were very evenly, matched. Dickel, for lijornington, played a good defensive game at fullback, and L. Johnston was the best of the halves. There was no combination among tho forwards. Catto, on tho right wing, was not up to his usual form, and the front line generally was weak. Southern missed the services of Donaldson, one of their best forwards. Jones played well on the left wing, and, put in some good centres, which wore not taken advantage of by tho inside men. Trevathan, at fullback, was off his game; but Les. Scott, the goalkeeper, gave a splendid exhibition. * Southern kicked off facing a strong sun

and a changing breeze, but their advance was effectively stopped by the Mornington halves, who shifted play to the other end of the field. Trevathan mi slacked near halfway, and a Mornington forward snatched the ball up and dashed off towards the goal, bn-t lost the leather near the Southern line. A good deal of midfield play followed, neither side having an advantage. Any attacks made were of a very loose nature. Dickel saved several times with strong lacks, and once or twice Scott (Southern) brought off some good) saves between the posts. The first half ended with neither side having scored. The second spell was not marked by any brilliant play, save for the excellent work done by Les. Scott, who cleared his goal mouth time and again. There was no score when the final whistle went, the game thus ending : Southern „ 0 Mornington 0 Mr M'Callum was the referee. OLD BOYS v. NORTHERN. This game was played on the Dardens ground,' which was in fair- condition. On the day’s play Old Boys were decidedly tho better team, and should have won by a bigger majority. Both teams were weak in, their front divisions, although tho individual play was good. Tho forwards lacked combination. Harraway was a good scoring man for tho Old Boys, and Peake played a good sound game with flashes of brilliancy. M'Mullan, on the wing, was fast, and showed up in attack. Duncan and Dry den played the best football for the losers, and Cherry did good work at centre half. Old Boys were the first to take the offensive, and ’ after a sharp attack took the ball to in front of their opponents’ goal, but Mitchell stopped a shot from M'Mullan, and play went to midfield. Old Boys continued to press, and North ern conceded a corner, which, however, was fruitless. Northern were hard put to keep their opponents from scoring, and is was only due to the safe kicking of the backs that Old Boys were deept out. Twice Northern got within scoring distance, but they could not get past Allen and Fleming. Northern were the first to draw blood. Duncan took tho ball well up the field and shot across to Dryden, who, on being tackled, centred in front of the goal, and O'Brien, tapping, beat the Old Boys’ guardian with a low ground shot. Northern 1-0. Play was give-and-take for a while, till from a corner awarded to Old Boys Harraway scored from in front of the goal mouth, equalising tho scores. _ . Old Boys forced the game in the opening stages of the second spell and severely tested tho Northern defence. From a splendid corner kick by M'Mulla.n Harraway headed the leather into the goal, putting Old Boys in the lead. Northern got away on several occasions, but could not force their attacks home. From a melee in front of Northern’s goal as tho result of a corner, Peake headed tho ball in, and a Northern player helped it on its way. Old Boys 3-1. Just before time Northern broke away, and a miskick bv Allen gave Duncan an opening, and he gave Leaker no opportunity. The game ended; Old Boys 3 Northern 2 Mr Rutherford had control of the game. SEACLIFF v. TAIERI. This match was played at Scacliff, and proved very interesting. The game was an even one, but Seaclitf had a strong advantage in the last twenty minutes. Hughes (2) and Hooper scored for Seacliff, and Macdonald and M'Lean for Taieri; and the final score thus was; Seacliff 3 Taieri 2 MOUNT ZION v. MAORI HILL.
