QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS.

TO THE EDITOR.

g; r _Tho results of tho Queensland elections must have been a shock to many of tho residents of New Zealand. To know that, after tho scathing exposures of maladministration by an unbiased Press, interviews of touring business men, and tales of discontent in tho Civil Service, the workers should still vote for their own instead of Tory representatives seems hardly credible. It seems strange that the tourists who told us what an awful condition Queensland was in were conspicuous by ■their absence from the meetings of Mr Ceilings and tho columns of the Press at the time tho Queensland Labor organiser was in Dunedin.

In the future, an all probability, not so much credence will bo placed on the attacks of newspapers and) vaporings of tourists when they concern a Labor Government. It will bo hard to find an excuse for the Labor victory, but no doubt some attempts will bo made to show that the real opinion of the electors was not expressed. After all, why should we bo surprised at elections not resulting in the decision tho anti-Labor Press and business men desire? The electors of Queensland have had many years of Tory and Liberal rule and eight years of Labor Government. They have decided with no uncertain voice which to them has proved tho most beneficial. Apparently the P.P.A. and bogus loyalty “ stunts ” cannot have made much impression on this enlightened •people. The Queensland Welfare and Citizens’ Leagues must also have missed fire very badly on this occasion. The useful people of the world are awakening. Quesonsknd is the forerunner of many Labor victories tho wide world over.—l am, etc., S.W.G. May 21.

[The result of the Queensland elections was not a surprise, for reasons that were made plain in the columns of the Press.— Ed. E.S.]
