“Absolutely shameless” was the phrase used by Sir Charles Oman in the House of Commons in a reference to the British silver coinage in 1920, 1921, and 1922. He declared, indeed, that it is the worst ever issued from the Mint, not excluding the horrible Victorian coinage of 1887, which is apparently a nightmare to all decently constituted numismatists. The design of the King’s Head on these coins seemed to annoy Sir Charles. “ His Majesty’s hair,” he said, "is scarcely visible in the large coins, and 1 rubs off in a few weeks.” The following best howler is quite authentic:—ln reply to a question “What is algebra?” the answer was given; “ Algebra i was the wife of Euclid.”
