CONCILIATION COUNCIL

THE TRAMWAY DISPUTE. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr W. 11. I Sagger) dealt this morning with the 'dispute filed by tlio Dunedin City Corporation Tramway Officials’ Union. The assessors for tlio union were Messrs E. W. Andersen, C. A. Umbers, and W. P. Deane Homan, Tlio corporation was represented by the tramway manager (Mr Mackenzie), The union claimed the. following rate of wages:—Depot engineer £7 2s > ()d, ear body foreman and overhead foreman Wi lms, chief Gallic clerk £6 4s (id, record clerk £-1 15s. traffic clerk lbs, general clerk, storekeeper, and revenue £o 2s fid, assistant revenue clerk £4 3s, lending hand and electric fitter £6 4s fid, messenger and ticket box dork £4, workshop charge hand £5 Os, chief inspector £6 12s Cd, traffic inspectors £‘i 2s Cd, ticket inspectors £5 17s. Those rates were _ to apply only so long as the respective positions were held by tlio present occupants. The conditions were to remain as at present, except that the •venue clerks should bo given ft_ sixday week, being granted a day off for each •Sunday worked. A fortnight’s holiday was claimed; also that workers employed on public holidays should receive an additional nine clays’ leave. Tlio dispute arose over the bonus reduction. Only 3s was deducted from tho inspectors’ wages; but other employees lost ss. Tlio authorities held that they wore on the same footing as clerks in the town clerk’s office. Owing to it being election day, neither the town clerk nor Cr Scott (dm in nan of the Tramways Committee) were Milo to attend, and it was agreed to adjourn argument on the wages danse until May 10. Tho six-day week for revenue clerks was agreed to, subject to an agreement regarding wages, and tho court’s preference clause accepted in place of the existing one, which was similar to one winch had been declared by the Supremo Court to ho invalid. The prosent clauses regarding annual leave and the method of dealing with complaints .were retained.
