FATAL FALL WITH CHILD. At the inquest in connection with the death of the infant found in the pardon of a ho nee at Sockbuni, Chnstchui'cli, recently, ft verdict was returned that the child’s’ death was duo to injuries to.the head, (received ’when the mother fainted with the child in her arms. The coroner said, though the mother had told _ a false story at first about finding the child, her other statements wore borne out b} medical evidence. THREW HERSELF IN RIVER. The body of Gertrude Cadness, aged twenty-two years, who disappeared iiom her homo oil .Saturday week-, was discovered on the Dikowai Beach, five miles north of Mnlata (Whakatano). ihc evidence at tlio inquest showed that deceased suffered recently from depression, and that apparently she threw herself into the river, and the body was carried out to sea. A verdict of suicide whilst tcmpoiaiil} insane was returned. AN ENGINEER’S DEATH. Ralph Myers Snowden, aged sixty-seven years, chief engineer of the steamer Inga, now in port, dropped dead of heart failuio on Tuesday evening whilst visiting tho signal station at Tiphead. Deceased belonged to Sydney.— Greymouth Dress Association message. Cairns, storeman in the National Mortgage and Agency Company's stores at Ashburton, was knocked to (he concrete floor on Monday morning by a sling load of wheat which crashed on him. Ho was taken to Die hospital. It is feared that tho base of his skull has boon fractured, and in addition ho sustained a dislocated ankle. Other persons narrowly escaped. A young woman, twenty years of age, named Alice Harper, living at North-east Valley, was admitted to tho hospital on Monday, having fallen down in a fit after wading through tho flood to get to work. She is suffering from a fractured jaw. Airs Monson. sixty-nine years old, residing in fit. Andrew street, was knocked clown on Monday by a motor car and sustained injuries to her back, necessitating her removal to tho hospital. Robert Maegregor, aged fifty-four, employed by G, .Afoody, tobacconist, Princes street, was taken to tho hospital on Monday, suffering from injuries to his log caused through falling downstairs.
