LICENSING REFORM
MODERATE LEAGUE’S SUGGESTION. WELLINGTON, April 24. At a meeting of the New Zealand Moderate League tho following resolutions were carried for submission to the Government ; “That, in view of the repeated 1 polls taken over many ycais and under varied conditions, all declaring definitely against Prohibition, it is manifestly the duty of the Government and Parliament to reform (lie licensing system in such a manner as will secure—(l) Promotion of temperance throughout tho dominion ; (2) supply to the public of pure and wholesome liquors; (o) improvement in accommodation and service to the. public; (4) prevention of trafficking in licenses; (5) abolition of the lied house system.” “That such bo marie, the subject of immediate legislative, action, pending the submission and adoption of a reasonable measure of State control.” “ That tho conference protests, on behalf- of all true temperance reformers, against the undemocratic proposal of the Prohibition Party to eliminate the third issue, thereby disfranchising those electors who, while opposed to Prohibition, have in the third issue the means of expressing them demand for licensing reform at the ballot box.”
