Y.M.O.A. CARNIVAL
■ Ml ~ CIRCUS AND GYMNASTIC DISPLAY. The Y.M.O.A. Carnival was continued ■ last evening, when* tho annual l circus and gymnastic display was held under the i direction, of Mr J. V. Hanna, physical 1 instructor. Through tho inclemency of . the weather and tho unfortunate circumstances of tho previous forty-eight hours, ’ tha attendance was moat limited, but those present appreciated to tho full tho entertaining and at times 1 highly amusing 1 programme. Classes comprising ladies, ; girls, men, and boys all appeared in their respective branches of physical work, in- ' eluding gymnastics on horizontal and parallel bars, horse, wands, clubs, dancing, and freo exorcises. Messrs Keesing, Gadder, and Hill gave one of their skilful and entertaining exhibitions of comedy acrobatics and tumbling, which was much appreciated. Mr Tamaio Pinko gave a Maori Lika with realism. Tho leaders’ corps contributed in a largo measure to tho success of tho fixture with their horizontal and 'parallel bar gymnastics. Throughout tho past year tho physical director has made a specialty of dancing stops, and during the evening the girls’ class was seen to advantage in this innovation. Tho wheel parade and competition by the younger boys was a colorful and exceedingly interesting feature of tho programme. Sir G. Drewitt and his orchestra greatly assisted in tho success ( of the programme in musical accompaniments and items. The whole entertainment, which will bo repeated to-night, was held in the gymnasium, which was decorated in an attractive style with flags and electric lights. The various stalls did good business on Saturday, each one showing a substantial profit.- The following are the latest results;—'Work stall! £4O Is lid, cake stall £ls 10s, cut flowers £5 7s, sweets £ll, produce £24 19s 6d, supper room £6 13s 6d, side shows £l6 15s od>, donations £10; total, £l2B 7s sd. Tho entertainment on Saturday evening took the form of a ladies’ gymnastic display. It was most effective .and well received by a fairly largo audience. Girls and Ladies from various groups, under the leadership of Mr Hanna, presented a varied programme of marching, wand drills, club swinging, and exercises on the rings, parallel bar, and hors?. Miss Emmerson rendered a musical item. The secretary of tho association (Mr Drew-) announced that tho girls had only had four sessions in instruction]. It was not a display so much as a demonstration of ordinary class activities.
