CITIZENS LEAGUE AND WOMEN CANDIDATES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—lt lias been stated that some members of this body are directly and personally interested in preventing tho return of women to the Hospital Board. In a flippant answer to this damning charge Mr Smcaton claims protection for Ins anonymous league against anonymous critic's. He says, further, that the league draws no distinction of sox or party. This is a most disingenuous statement, and is so lacking in frankness as to destroy any remaining confidence in the bona tides of the league members. The fact is that the league did meet, and did decide to oppose the return of women. But it is unnecessary to go outside, the league's own advertisements for disproof of Mr Smeaton’s statement. The league urges the electors to vote for all the male members of the old board who are standing, and so secure sound and progressive administration. This means that the league is satisfied with the past conduct of the board’s affairs. If so, why are the women omitted, seeing that one of them has sat on the board for ten years and another has a more intimate knowledge ol hospital management than any other member? And yet the league pretends that it is taking past service into account! It is quite evident that the league, or soiiio of the wiser heads of it, now realise that it made a stupid tactical blunder when it decided to attack tho women, as the latter have a considerable number of votes. But this change of front is due not to true repentance, but to anoyance at being found out. —I am, etc., Elector. April 23.
