CONTINUOUS AND HEAVY RAINFALL

SATURDAY EVEHIHfi TO MONDAY RSORNINO. Saturday was a sulky day. A grey sky, a moist atmosphere, and a falling barometer indicated even to the unobservant that, something was coming. And something did some. The herald was a [ight sprinkling from the south-west about 3 o’clock in the afternoon. As the light faded the sprinkle became rain, then lieavv rain. All uighb there was a constant downpour, with a gusty wind. Sunday morning scorned to promise a little better, for the downpour was more in the nature of showers; but by the time people began to stir in thc-ir preparations for church-going or observation tours very heavy plumps descended, as though cisterns were being emptied from above. So it continued all the afternoon. Towards evening the rain became lighter, but it kept on steadily all night. This morning the appearances overhead were a litllo more hopeful, for the rain had lessened to what was not much more than a heavy mist, and by 11 o’clock the clouds were decidedly thinner, giving every appearance of a cessation before long.
