Tho field had traversed two furlongs and was hunched in front of the stand, when Festivity (Alexander) fell, bringing down Taipairu (Garrett), and seriously interfering with Wheat,field, who pulled out with two furlongs to go. Dainty Step (Butler) came down with a broken let-lock. Dainty Step was destroyed, and the other three horses concerned were seriously injured. Festivity and Taipairu’s racing careers have finished, and owing to the former’s head injuries it may have to bo destroyed, and Wheatfield is an unlikely starter in future meetings, Alexander and Garrett were conveyed to the hospital with slight injuries, no bones being broken. A meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club Committee was held yesterday afternoon, when twenty applications were received for tho position of handicapper. The action of the Tanamn Club in disqualifying Killory for being trained by an unlicensed trainer was endorsed, also that of the Gore Club in disqualifying Cazna for the same reason.

At Urn Ellesmere Trotting Club's Meeting to-day (a non-totalisator meeting) eight useful handicap horses faced the starter m the Ellesmere County Handicap, and after an interesting race Leila Denver won with a little in hand from Dixie Mac and Percy Dillon. The winner showed a lot of speed, and by getting to the end of a mile and a-half" in 3min 33scc registered_ a good performance. Dixie Mac, from 153yds behind, gave one of the finest exhibitions of trotting seen on the course, and private watches made the time 3min 26|scc. GOLF. CORONATION MEDAL COMPETITION. A Wellington message states that the annual competition for the Golf Lnion s homo links" Coronation Medal is _to bo played this year on all the courses in New Zealand during the last week of May. This has always attracted a large number of entries from all clubs, and there is keen interest in the result. The club secretaries are urged to send in their returns as promptly _as possible. The last day in May being a Thursday, the dates available for the competition are from Monday, May 28, to Saturday, Juno 2. SPORTS PROTECTION ASSOCIATION. A meeting was held in Mr E. S. Wilson’s board room to consider the question of reviving the Otago Amateur Athletic Club’s Sports’ Protection Association, Mr J. S, Hislop presiding. In his opening remarks, the Chairman explained that in 1916 it was found impossible to get a quorum at the annual meeting, so it was resolved that matters remain as they were in the meantime, and that the secretary be instructed to call a general meeting when the need of the association arose, and it was felt that the' time had now arrived to reform the association. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that the association bo resuscitated. Mr Hislop moved, Mr D. Bannatyne seconding, that the former rules of the society be adopted.—The motion was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. S. Hislop; committee—Messrs I). Rannalync (swimming), W. A. Rowlands (cricket), D. M. Spedcling (Rugby), H. E. Lyon (rowing), L. H. ASSOCIATION UPHOLDS EXECUTIVE. A general meeting of the Otago State Primary Schools’ Sports’ Association was held yesterday afternoon, when it was unanimously resolved—“ That the action of the executive in its determination to carry on with all sports as before be approved by that meeting.” This re,ally means that the association intends to control its own football, irrespective of the jurisdiction of the Otago Rugby Union, and that the State primary school boys will not take part in matches against boys from tho denominational schools.

The meeting also unanimously decided to do away with the wing forward in State school football.
