‘SCANDAL’

THE MUCH-DISCUSSED COMEDY. The Sydney ‘ Sun ’ said of Cosmo Hamilton’s play ‘ Scandal,’ which comes to His Majesty’s Theatre for a season of three nights, commencing next Thursday evening, under the direction of Harry I. Cohen—“ an enormously interesting comedy.” Cosmo Hamilton has written ‘ Scandal ’ with a sense of style and a sense of verity. It is easily the most workman-like of all the bedroom comedies of the last ten years, and nearly always fills with genuine dramatic thrill —you rarely feel the piecing of the situations. Virtually the whole third act, with its quick and charming early curtain, is made with wit, sense, and skill. There is more thanv a scare in ‘ Scandal ’—there arc human characters opposed, with nerves and brains behind them. * Scandal ’ aroused much controversy in Sydney owing to the nature of the play. Phis did not, however, militate against its success, but rather tended to increase the interest on the part of the public to see it. The general opinion was that in staging ‘ Scandal ’ popular taste had been accurately judged. Tbo piece is well acted and has an exceptionally strong cast. Besides Doris Duane, the leading woman, who is an American actress specially imported for the production, and Eric Harrison, whose work is always of the highest order, there are George Broad, Harold Moran, Arthur Orbell, Lucy Carter, John Galway, Arthur Adams, Mary M'Gregor, Grahamc Newton. ‘ Scandal ’ lias had an exceptionally fine run in the north. The ‘ Dominion ’ (Wellington) says: “‘Scandal’ opened to a capacity house, which thoroughly enjoyed this daring and delightful comedy. It contains much saucy incident and mischievous piquancy, but never oversteps the border line. _ ‘Cosmo Hamilton’s story is ‘ innocence with a bit of the devil in her.’ ” The plans for the season opened at The Bristol to-day.
