COLLAPSE OF CONCRETE PIER. At an inquest in. Dannevirke concern,* ing the death of John Bell, who wan,killed at the Mangatawai-iti bridge on Friday, the evidence showed that deceased was stripping the casing off a green concrete pier when trie pier collapsed, deceased being buried under the concrete in the space between the rasing holding the bank and, that holding the pier. The pier was only nut into posh ton the day prior to the accident. The opinion of witnessoss was that the earthquake the same evening damaged it to such an extent as to canso it to The coroner’s verdict was that death was caused through a fracture of the skull. OLD TIAN RUN DOWN.
A Christchurch Association message slates that the special train conveying Mr M'Villv (general manager of railways) on an inspecton of lines was running over Antigua street crossing this morning when an old wan, whoso identity has not been cntablished, walked right into the train and was struck by the cylinder of the locomotive and thrown backwards on to the tramway rails. The old man, who sustained a compound fracture of the aim, and head injuries, had not regained coil* sciousness this afternoon. He was evidently deaf and feeble. FELL ON HLS AXE. A Dargaviiie Association message states that a married .man, Frod. Harkins, _ camp cook at Stanaway s Bush, Mamaramu, was discovered vesterdav with a severe wound in his throat. Ho was removed lo_ a neighbor’s house and received attention till’ the doctor arrived. The_ man was afterwards taken to the hospital, where bo is progressing favorably. Ho nays that the wound was inflicted accidentally by falling on Ids axe.
