TOWN PLANNING SOCIETY

THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. MUCH TREE PLANTING. The annual report of the Amenities and Town Planning Society states: - Under the direction of Mr Tannock a large amount, of tree planting work was carried, out during tlio year. This was facilitated by an arrangement with the Returned Soldiers’ Association, under which unemployed soldiers were engaged in planting trees, the Amenities Society paying half of the wages and the R.S.A. the other half. This scheme was mutually advantageous, and the results were entirely satisfactory. _ , Trcer were planted in the following localities, in streets which had been sped ally prepared: —Wilkie road (ash), Law street (hornbeam), View street (copper beech), Main South road, from a point near the tramway terminus to the top of Look-out Point (limes), Meadow street (ash), Eglintou road (ash), Anderson Lay fowling Green (pyrus), Monna crescent • (various), and Tennyson street (elms). The proposed planting in Cumberland street to the Anderson Bay road was postponed at the request of the Works Committee of the City Council, as the street levels had not been determined. The trees which were authorised for that purpose were purchased, and are now under Mr Tannock’s care in-the nursery. A shrubbery was established in Union street, near the Home Science School. Hu's consists chiefly of barberries, ornamental fruit trees, and trees which are noted for their autumn lints. Another shrubbery was planted near the >St. David street bridge, and two wore placed on the Anderson Bay road and surrounded with rustic fences. The trees comprising the Upper Dundns street shrubbery were removed, and the space was replanted with dwarf shrubs, which is a distinct improvement. An extensive shrubbery was formed at the corner of the Anderson Bay and Portobello roads. As this is a windy spot, a scrub fence was creeled in order to protect the trees. A band of marigolds which was planted in front of the trees gave the spot a gay and attractive appearance. Luring the year .Mr Tannock was authorised to expend the sum of £lO in purrhasing cherry trees from France. These have arrived, and are in the nursery. LAKE LOGAN FOB SPORTS.

The committee initiated a 'movement which had for its object, the acquirement of the whole of the Lake Logan area for a sports ground for the citizens of Dunedin. Several conferences of bodies interested have been held, and negotiations are still in progress in regard to the matter. Substantial progress has been made, and it is hoped Unit the larger interests will prevail. The mayor (Mr Douglas) has lent invaluable assistance, and the sympathetic attitude of the Otago Harbor Board has also helped materially. A later development is a suggestion that the area should be used for the purposes of the Imperial Exhibition, which it is suggested should be held in Dunedin in 19135. The ground could be admirably adapted to such a purpose, and the land could be handed over to the citizens after the closing of the exhibition. UPPER DOWLING STREET, The committee was represented at a conference of various bodies which was convened to consider the question of having improvements made in Upper Dowling street, particularly that portion above the steps on the edge of Princes street. A deputation from the conference afterwards waited on the AVorks Committee of the City Council, The deputation was cordially and sympathetically received, and an assurance given that the- matter would be fully considered. The result is that the eity engineer is now preparing plans for alterations that will make this important thoroughfare more accessible and improve its present unattractive appearance. The balance-sheet shows that the total funds at the credit of the society amount to £217 8s 4d, of which sum £ll2 Is, the accumulated life members’, subscriptions, is deemed capital, and the balance (£lO5 7s 4d) includes the balance of the late Peter Smeaton’s bequest, which has been earmarked for planting trees in Cumberland street.
