NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. The annual New Yogi* tournament of the Otago Golf Club was commenced this morning at the Balmacewen Links. Owing to the rain yesterday the course generally was slightly on the heavy side, although' the greens were in excejlent condition, as also were the fairways qnd lies. The fairway was nicely cut and in exceptionally good order, but the home# and second greens were fairly damp. The entries this year number about forty, which is much lower than last year. This morning a bogey handicap "was played, and this afternoon a medal handicap. These events are principally for the benefit of the visiting golfers, so as to give them an opportunity to know the course for the championship of Otago, which will commence to-morrow with the playing off of the qualifying rounds.
