FINE BAG OF LIONS
SEVEN IN ONE “SHOOT.” Big game hunters can still find plenty of lions in Rhodesia waiting to be shot. Seven fell recently before three men, three guns, and thirteen cartridges. The shooting took place on Lieutenantcolonel Sir Randolf Baker’s estate at Makeni Leauka, near the Zambesi. His cattle manager, a Dutchman named Prinsloo, was out in the open with a young apprentice and an estate employee. They had three rifles, two big ,450’s and one .305, and thirteen cartridges, one only of which v.as for the smaller rifle. Unexpectedly they came across seven lions, five of which they killed outright in the Spat excited burst of fire. Two were wounded, and all the ammunition was expended. One of the wounded beasts disappeared into the thick grass, bub the other, the hugest of the party, rushed at the apprentice as he fired his last round. Behind the youth was Prinsloo on horseback. As the lion came forward the apprentice jumped aside, and with despairing vigor struck the beast in the side with h : a empry rifle. The lion promptly chased Prinsloo, who began to gallop away, as he alia nad no cartridges. _ The chase lasted about 2(>yds, until the lion, with reviving memory” turned back to the apprentice, into whose f-ho aider he bit deeply. Then, apparently content, ha disappeared into the grass. On the following day the parly again went out and burned the grass.” They found seven dead lions, a satisfactory bag for an accidental “shoot.” The apprentice recovered in a week.
