That a girl should be married at five, and be a widow long before she reaches her teens, seems to us unbelievable, yet thousands of such cases happen in India every year. Attempts have been made from” time to time to have the practice of (.mid marriage abolished, but with little success. The system forms part of the Hindoo religion, and changes have to be made with .great caution.
