The Wanaka. left Dunedin last night for Oanumi, Timaru, and Lyttelton to complete her loading for Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. The Whangape is due at Wellington tomorrow from Sydney. She should arrive at Dunedin via Lyttelton about tho end of next week. After discharging a large quantity of general freight the Whangapo will go to Bluff and Svdney. A cablegram from London states that the steamer Knight Companion, bound from Hull to Australian porta, passed Las Palmas on December 19. The lonic is to sail from Lyttelton on December 28 for Port Chalmers to continue loading for Southampton and London. Tho Port Caroline is to leave London on January 24 for Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Tinmrn. Tho Marino Department advises that tho lighted Whistling buoy at the entrance to Lyttelton, Harbor has been replaced. The Union Company's cargo steamer Kawatiri sailed from Newcastle at 7 a.m. on Saturday last for Auckland. The Kawatiri was the last Union Company’s vessel that was manned att Auckland with a volunteer crew. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Rimutifca is to leave Napier to-night for Wellington to complete loading. She will sail finally from Wellington on the 28th inst. for Southampton. and Loudon via Panama. THE FERRY SERVICE. Tho Maori arrived at Lyttelton at 7.35 a.m. to-day from Wellington, and mails and passengers connected with the first express for the south. DORSET HOMEWARD BOUND. The Dorset, which left Auckland on November 2 for London, continued her voyage from Las Palmas chi December 16.

How necessary It is that tho life-saving appliances of vessels should be examined regularly is instanced by tho case of the steamer Tangistan, which recently visited Sydney. In the ordinary course of their duties, the Sydney officers of tho Navigation Department mado an inspection of the steamer's lifeboats. On the starboard boats being lowered, water rushed into them and they sank. The port boats , sank even more quickly. A largo number of lifebelts were earned on the vessel, but after examination they were condemned. The vessel has put into many ports within the last six months or so, and that tho condition of her life-saving appliances was not known is, to say tho least, remarkable, Before visiting Australia the Tangisian was engaged carrying thousands of Mohammedan pilgrims to Mecca. REMUERA OUTWARD BOUND. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company's Remuera sailed from Southampton on December 18 for Auckland and Port Chalmers via Colon and Panama. She has on 'board for Now, Zealand 494 passengers, and is expected at Auckland about January 23. The Remuera is making her first trip under fuel oil, and it is anticipated that she will make a smart passage out. INTERCOLONIAL SERVICES, The Paloona will arrive hero at about 8 o’clock to-morrow morning from Melbourne via Lyttelton and Wellington, mid will berth at the cross wharf. After discharge she will withdraw from tho service and lay up at Port Chalmers. The Moeraki was duo to leave Sydney to-day for Wellington, where she should arrive on Tuesday. She will then withdraw from the Sydney sendee, and take up the Paloona’s miming in the Melbourne service, leaving Wellington next Friday. The Mamma, after being laid up at Wellington for the .greater part of tho winter, will be recommissioned for the Sydney service, and will leave for there on Friday next. MAIMOA DUE TO-MORROW. Tho National Mortgage and Agency Company advises that the _ S.S. and A. steamer "Maimoa, which arrived at Auckland last week, is due here to-morrow; but owing to tho holidays she will not commence working cargo till next week. She will load a quantity of wool purchased at the recent wool sale for East ■Coast American ports and Great Britain. Tho vessel will call at Bluff, Lyttelton, Timaru, Wellington, and Auckland, leaving tire last-named port about January 20. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
