OUR NAVAL STRENGTH

THE NEW CAPITAL SHIPS,

Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright.

LONDON, December 6. Lord Linlithgow (Civil Lord of the Admiralty), in the House of Lords, replying to Lord Sydenham, said he could not make a definite statement regarding the laying down of Britain’s two new capital ships permitted under the Washington Treaty. Lord Lee (late First Lord of the Admiralty) said: “The statement fills me with* alarm. The signatories to_ the treaty agreed to scrap nineteen British battleships only on the understanding that we should lay down two capital ships embodying the lessons _of Jutland.” Lord Salisbury said that it should not bo assumed that an adverse decision had been reached. An announcement would be made at the earliest moment. Viscount Cave said the Cabinet Committee was considering the matter. It was expected to report prior to the now session.—A. and N.Z. Gable.
