POLITICS AND CLASSES

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-dii reply to a question cm national finance'pul to him by an elector on Thursday last, tho Hon. W. DownieStewart said that certain measures which he then thought to bo necessary and just bad no chance to pass tho House of Parliament, because the House, as then constituted, was predomincntly a. {armors’ Parliament, and it could not be expected that men would vote for legislation opposed to their own interest. This is an astonishing admission to make by tho Hon. Minister for Internal Affairs against his own party—an admission that national welfare was sacrificed for personal interests. Yet this same party of self-interested men has the hardihood to ask the people to vote against Labor on the grounds of national safety, and accuses the Labor Party at the same time, of disloyalty! I ask- you, sir, and the electors, whether national polities can deteriorate much lower when we find on. tho admission of a Minister that national welfare and stability were sacrificed by a majority of its legislators, who controlled the country’s affaire during a critical period, to personal considerations? It is easy to see that this is pure and unadulterated class-biased government with n vengeance, and tho Reform Party forfeits the right to accuse the Labor Party of preaching class warfare and class government. —I am, etc., M.S. December 4-.
