ALLEGED THREAT TO UNIONISM.

10 THE KDITOII. Sir,—-In one of your loaders, commenting on some remarks of mine regarding the employers deciding to approach Mr Massey after the election, should his party be returned to power, in order to take such measures as will destroy unionism in this country, you pooh-pooh my statement. I wish to state that I have the inside information, and it is for the employers and the Chamber of Commerce to como out with a plain statement at this time as to their attitude towards unionism. It is interesting to note that at the recent conference of delegates from Chambers of Commerce held in this city the question of preference to unionists came up for consideration. There was almost a unanimous decision that the privilege or right should go. However, it was finally decided to defer the matter till after the General Election, as any action now might prejudice the Government. I ask for no camouflaging of the situation, and for a Mr Editor, if you do not know, to your pen in abeyance.—l am, etc.. John Gilchrist. Labor Candidate, Dunedin Central

November 23. TWe should -bo glad of Mr Gilchrist’s evidence that preference to unionists was ever mentioned at the conference of Chambers of Commerce. It was not the subject of any remit; we can find no reference to it in the published reports, which were unusually extensive and detailed, and all the business of the conference was discussed openly.—Ed. E.S.]
