QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations was held last night in the crypt of St. I aul s Cathedral The president (Rev. Wra. Mr Tom Anderson, secretary of the Fishermen's Union, was then welcomed by the president, and urged the council to use its influence against the practice of Sunday fishing. After Mr Anderson had stated his case, various questions were ■put to him by the members, disclosing aspects of a somewhat intricate and difficult matter. On Mr Anderson's retiremerit a committee was appointed to make full inquiries of the local trawl owners and fishermen, to correspond with other centres of the fishing industry, and,to^report no early as possible to the executive. The Rev. Rugby Pratt said that the treatment of s«oh questions indicated a useful Lino of service which the council might, render to tho community in promoting helpful co-operative contact between employers and employed, and in bringing moral and religious pruiciples to bear on commercial and industrial relationships. Sooular,_ F. Smith, Wilkinson, Curtis, H. H. Driver (convenor), and Captain Sundstrum; Bible Teaching in State Schools-Mtevs. A. H. Wallace (convener), I. Sargmson, A. JM. Dalrymplo, G. H. Jupp, R. H. Hampton, Ftnlayson, R-. Fairmaul, Hamblett. Canon Nevill, and W. R. Hutchison. The President, on behalf of the council, presented the Rev. G. H. Jupp with several volumes of ‘theology as mementos of his secret-ami connection ‘with the council for three years prior to its reconstruction. He alluded to the very painstaking and efficient services rendered by Mr Jupp, and said the present was by no means an adequate recognition of their value, but a token of the grateful appreciation of the council. In receiving the gift Mr Jupp said it had been a joy to him to act as secretary and to be brought into official association with the leaders of the commercial, industrial, and ,'vic life of the community. The successive mavors had always recognised the utility of the council, and availed thornselves of its aid afi opportunity occurred. The many years of faithful service rendered by the, Rev. George Heighway, who has now retired from the nnmstry at seventy years of age, were also gratefully recalled, and the president and seanetary were directed to send him a letter of fraternal greeting.
