SANDERS CUP TRIALS

MONA WINS SECOND TEST. Tho second of the series of trial races for the fourteen-foot Jellicoo class boats was sailed on Saturday afternoon over the Otago Yacht Club’s course. Seven boats started in a light north-easterly breeze. Tho winner was Mr B. S. Irwin’s Mona (formerly Iona), which was well handled by a. light and youthful crew of three, with H. Watson at tho tiller. Tho conditions suited tho Mona, and she was the liveliest boat of the fleet. Some very pretty sailing was witnessed between Mona, Winifred, lona, and Heather, with little to choose between any of them./ Eunice was again first over tho line, but was recalled, and lost about three minutes at the start. AVinifrcd lost hq.lf a minute by'responding to tho recall intended for Eunice. lona was tho first to haul on the wind, closely followed by Heather, Valmai, Mona, and Agnes. In tho long beat to the lower buoy lona field her place, rounding the mark with Heather and Mona close up. On the run homo AVinifred, bringing up the breeze, overhauled the leading boats, but Mona., lying nearer tho Peninsula, showed still better pace, and completed the first round in tho lead, with Winifred not many seconds behind, and lona and Heather only a few lengtlis away. In the' second round the wind veered more into the east, and became lighter and more variable. AVinifrcd headed Mona for a few tacks, but off Turnbull's the white boat, footing it the faster, again took the lead, and held it this time to the finish. On the run back lona drew away slightly from Heather, and in tho short beat to the finishing lime almost caught Winifred. Agnes and Valmai fought out on interesting duel for fifth place. Eunice faded to make up any of the time she lost at tho start, and fell away considerably in the second round. The official results were; Mona, 2h 32min 40s oo Winifred, 2h 33mLa 48scc 2 points. lona, 2h 55mm 54seo 1 point. Heather finished in 2h 34min 48scc, Agnes in 2h 40min 62sec, Valmai in 2h 41min JCsec. Eunice was about four minutes behind Valmai. AUCKLAND AGAIN. A special meeting of the committee of tho Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association will be_ held on Tuesday evening next to discuss several important matters, and to decide whether it will bo necessary to sail the seven test races before tho Otago representative boat is chosen to go to Auckland. The first two races had to bo abandoned owing to adverse weather conditions. One of tho other matters to bo dealt with is a letter from the Auckland Association, the contents of which are very disturbing not only to tho Otago but to all the other associations. A united effort will no doubt bo mado to oppose the new proposals put forward by tho Auckland Association in connection with tho Sanders Cup contests. Theso proposa!s_ will bo mado known at Tuesday’s meeting.
