JUBILEE SCHOOL CONCERT

FURTHER ADDRESSES. ( Tho concert in the Town Hall, Port Chalmers, yesterday evening in celebration of the diamond jubilee of the District High School was very successful, _ The pupils supplied the concert portion of _ the programme, the other portion being speeches by ex-pupils, es-teachors, ana ex-ooramittco members, Tho speeches were reminiscent and entertaining. Mr J. M‘Lachlan, who is an old member of the School Committee, of which ho was chairman for eighteen years, presided, and ho announced that g« so many people had failed to gain admission, the entertainment would he repeated tho following evening. Seats on the plat-, form were provided for ex-pupils who attended the school between 1866 and 1866.

Sir J. Mill was the first speaker, and as ho had been a member of the School Com mi tie, off and on, since 1875 lie was necessarily listened to with earnest attention. Ho came to Port Chalmers sixty years ago, he said, and ho had always taken an interest in educational movements. Port Chalmers School had been fortunate in having good teachers. The chiMrou’s singing that evening was delightful. Mr AliH proceeded to speak of the value of education, and Britain’s noble part in its promulgation. He referred in interesting anecdote to tho history of the school, and hoped tho school would continue to do good work in tho future, which would ho tho most fitting tribute to the pioneers who worked for its welfare in tho early days. Very appropriate reminiscent speeches were given by Dr A. R. Falconer (expupil), Air C. R. Boasence (ex-rector), Mr j. Ronnie (ox-rector), and Mr J. Harland (Old Identities’ Association). Tho concert portion of tho programme was very pleasing, and a credit to the rector (Mr Cb. F, Booth) and his staff. Tho infant department sang their part songs very charmingly, the butterfly song- and dance by girls of Standards I. and 11. was dainty, and the dialogues by pupils of Standard IV. and girls of Standard V. were done with a neatness which won the very cordial approval of tho audience.
