THE SHIPPING HOLD-UP

FEDERATION STILL DEBATING. MANY VESSELS IDLE. Tho position in connection with the seau en’s trouble remains unchanged. Rumors were current in Wellington yesterday that some definite pronouncement would bo made by tho executive of the Seamen’s Federation last night, hut Mr Young, the necretary, states that tho executive is still in session, and likely to remain so until tho end of tho week. • The Ulimaroa arrived 1 yesterday with a crow on articles. No trouble is anticipated. There are now five red funnel steamers held up at Lyttelton, with every prospect of a sixth and possibly a seventh being idle. The latest to join the idle fleot is the Kini, which was compelled to anchor in the stream instead of proceeding to Napier, owing to being short of a man. Tho Kakapo is four, men short. Endeavors made yesterday to fill the vacancies were without success. The steamers idle in tho northern port are the Karori, the Wingatui, the Kmi, the Katoa, and the Wanaka. SUGAR AND FLOUR SHORT. A Napier message states that up to midnight there was no trouble with the seamen there, but the delay of ships at Auckland and Lyttelton will, if protracted', be serious. Merchants’ sugar supplies are almost exhausted, and retailers’ stocks are very low. Some of the latter find it advisable to limit the quantities sold 1 to the public in order to conserve supplies. Merchants proposed to rail sugar from Auckland, but have novv resolved to defer action, hoping for a shipment next week. With reference to flour, only small stocks arc carried, and difficulty is-antici-pated on account of the Kini being hold up at Lyttelton.
