IMPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

DISCHARGE OF OVERSEAS GOODS AT DUNEDIN. SATISFACTORY ARRANGEMENT. The monthly meeting of the Importers and Shippers’ Association was held in too secretary s office last evening, those present being Messrs H. 0. Campbell (chairman), E. Johnston, G. Benson, V. M Shortt, 11. Cuddle, A. E. Usherwood, and H. Henderson. An apology was received from Mr A. H. Allen. Satisfaction was expre.ssed that the efforts fo secure discharge of oversea ships at Dunedin wharves had_ proved so successful, as 'practically during the last two months every ship from Home had discharged its cargo at Dunedin, and in eorno instances outward cargo loaded. Correspondence received from shipping companies indicated their intention to continue this practice whenever it was at all possible. Some discussion took place in regard to the present dislocation of ehippiusf, more especially at northern port®, but" which is already having its effect locally. 'Mt was therefore resolved to communicate with the Welfare League to ascertain if it could not do something towards remedying the present unsatisfactory state of affaire. 'lt was also announced that by the joint efforts of fho Chamber of Commerce and the association the new Sea Carriage of Goods Act had been passed in Parliament, .and would become law as soon as the Governor’s assent was given. The passing of this Act will be of very valuable assistance to those who are in the habit of shipping on our coast. It was agreed that the chairman should represent the association on the Exhibition Committee, which was _in charge of the arrangement for exhibitors at forthcoming London Exhibition of Empire products in 1924.
