The Melbourne Cup, run at Flemington yesterday, was witnessed by a large gathering, including the Governor-General of the Commonwealth and tho State Governor. After a delay the field spread right across the course, and when they were despatched ■ Furious, Yacamunda,, Even Song, Whittier, and Rivoli were the leaders. As tho course proper was reached Yacamunda assumed command, and setting tho pare, piloted l tho field along and out of the straight. Along the bade stretch Sinbad the Sailor, Master Vibrator, Molyneux, and Tho Cypher were in tho leading division, with Yacamunda still tho pacemaker. Whittier, King Ingoda, and Rivoli were at that stage some distance back. Approaching the bridge, Yacamunda cried enough, and Besolla took up the running,, while Tho Cypher (N.Z.) was making a forward move. Nearing tiro homo turn, Tangalooma, who was Iting fourth, proclaimed himself, but his effort was short-lived. Molyneux led into tho straight, with Tho Cypher, King Ingoda, and Mufti closing Up rapidly. The Cypher’s name was called as a prospective winner at the distance, but King Ingoda promptly joined issue, and a magnificent struggle ensued. Ridden vigorously, the two horses fought for the lead' for a furlong, amid roars, and iru the end. King Ingoda had tho advantage, winning byhalf a neck from The Cypher, who was two lengths and a-half in front of Mtfiti. Sister Olivo was fourth. Even Song, Purser. Paratoo, Heir Apparent, Wirraway, The Rover, Basclla, Liberty Loan, and Molyneux wore next- Furious was a bad last. Time, 3min 28jsec. Double Beziqne fell during the race, and breaking a fetlock was destroyed. Polynesian and Stare also fell, the latter’s rider (M‘ MLaughlin) sustaining a splintered collarbone. King Ingoda, on the outside, put in a great run from the halfmile, and won narrowly from The Cypher, who ran a great race. Mufti was a moderate third, and just beat Sister Olive. The first half-mile was done in Slijscc, tho next four furlongs in 53scc, the succeeding four furlong in 52sec, the last four in 51sec, and the last six in Imin 16]sec. The winner is jointly owned by Mr Dubois, a Central Australian pastoralist, and Mr Bennett, an Adelaide lawyer. Scobie is the trainer. Alan Wilson, the rider, stated that he had a good ran, and covered more ground than anything else. NOTES BY “THE ADMIRAL.” Once again an 'outsider has prevailed in tho principal handicap event of the Commonwealth for the year, and tho investing public has had tho worst of the deal with the Ring. When the last mail left the other side King Ingoda’s name was not mentioned in-the betting, while The Cypher had gone out of favor in consequence of Iris defeat when heavily supported by the stable at Flemington less than a month ago. In the latest discussion David was.a firm favorite, with Harvest King and Whittier following on tlie same mark. Purser, Wirraway, and Honey Bee came next. Violoncello, Prince Charles, Keneppil, and Heir Apparent constituted the succeeding bunch, while Station, The Cypher, Rivoli, and Tangalooma followed. King Ingoda was not a competitor in tho Caulfield Cup, hut sported silk in the Coongy Handicap, Ilf, won by Paratoo, in which ho was unplaced. He is by Comedy King, winner of the Melbourne Cup (1910), out of Ingoda, winner of the Canterbury Oaks (19091. _ The Cypher was bred in New Zealand, and raced as a. two-year-old- last season in the interests of the Estate of the late W. J. Douglas, of Napier. Ho finished third fo Tressuyr and Prosperity in the Pioneer Handicap, sf, on the concluding day of tho New Zealand Cup Meeting, and won the Criterion Handicap, 6f, and the Sylvia Handicap, 6f, at the Auckland Cup Meeting, carrying 8.7 in tho last-named event. The Cypher (7.9) went out -a strong order for the October Handicap, l;jm, w.f.a., at the V.R.C. Meeting four weeks ago, but was decisively beaten by Tangalooma (9,3) It is just a twelve-month since Sister Olivo, who ran fourth yesterday, won tho Melbourne Cup, and landed a largo sum in bets for her owner, Mr F. W. Norman.
