THE LICENSING POLL

USING THE " DIGGER ” AS PROPAGANDA RESENTED BY EX-SOLDIERS. Indignant protests were made by la number of members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association at the quarterly meeting last night at the use of pictures of soldiers as propaganda on advertisements in connection with the forthcoming poll on the Ijquor question. Mr S. Cameron, who brought up the matter, referred to the fact that in an issue of ‘ Cheerio' there was the picture of a “digger" holding out a dixie —lor beer, he supposed. He did not think capital should bo made out of the “digger” in that way. The Chairman (tho Rev. Hector Maclean) said that unless there was a reference to returned) soldiers ho did. not think exception could be taken to the matter. There was no special reference to returned soldiers.

Mr J. M'Crao also voiced a protest against, the “digger” being used for advertising purposes. It should bo made clear that they as an association took no part in politics. As individuals they could do as they pleased. Neither the Liquor Party nor the Prohibition Party had any right to work on tire “returned soldier stunt” at all. They should protest against such advertisements being used by one side or the other.

Tho following motion, proposed by Mr M'Crao, was seconded and carried unanimously : That this meeting resents anything in tho nature of advertisements or any other use made of “returned soldiers” either by the Liquor Party or by tho Prohibition Party.
