TROTTING
NEW ZEALAND CUP CANDIDATES. [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, October 9. Those New Zealand Trotting Cup candidates who had a dress rehearsal in the Lewisham Handicap at Saturday’s benefit meeting were eagerly scanned. Agathos, the winner, has not looked in better condition for many a long day. Locanda Dillon showed his customary great burst of speed, but was stopping in the last ftrrlong. General Link looked in first-class condition, and was pacing strongly in the third place. Reta Peter made a good showing, and it looks as if the daughter of Petereta may have the field in the New Zealand Trotting Cup doing their best for the third year _in succession. An exhibition of pacing by the two Aus-tralian-bred horses Box Seat and Happy Voyage was an interesting item, and, though neither was fully extended, the work-out showed both horses to be well above the average. Great Hope, the champion three-year-old of last season, gave a finished display of pacing in the Owners’ and Breeders’ Handicap, winning in good stylo from Star Queen and Lady Joan, both of whom paced 1 well.
