M ‘CLEARY-WHITAKER FIGHT. LIGHT-HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. , [Special to the ‘ Star.’] CHRISTCHURCH, September 11. In the contest between Brian M'Cleary (Canterbury) and C. Whitaker (Wellington) for a puree of £2OO and the ligjht-hoavy-weight championship of New Zealand, Whitaker showed great _ improvement since his last appearance in Christchurch. M'Cleary also put more snap and vim into his blows than ever before. _ In the first couple of rounds Whitaker hold a slight advantage over hia shorter rival, but from then on .M'Cleary gradually piled up the points in his favor. M‘Cleary’s clever footwork stood him in good stead, and his ducking at times made his opponent miss badly. Whitaker showed himself possessed of a rather useful lefthand punch, but on occasions was of hitting with the open glove. Though M'Cleary won the majority of rounds, tho fight was always interesting, which tile great crowd present thoroughly appreciated. The fight went the full fifteen rounds, M'Cleary gaining the verdict on points. CONTESTS IN AUSTRALIA. A t tho Sydney Stadium on Saturday night Stan Love heat Larry Jones (America) on points. Tho contest _ was tame, neither man putting much ginger into his efforts. Stanley M'Bride knocked out Jamito in the fourteenth round, after sultry fighting, in Melbourne Stadium. EUROPEAN FEATHER-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. Oriqui knocked out Wyns in. the sixth round of a match for the feather-weight championship of Europe, cays a Paris cable.
