AMPUTATION IN AIM
POCKET KNIFE USED. Hop/ a surgical operation was performed wth a pookoi knifo ou a man who was hanging from machinery in which ho bad boon caught was told to Cardiff Kofcarians iny Mr A. K. Harrison, .ticreta.ry of the Glamorgan division of tlw Red Crews Society. Mi Harrison said a workman at Cardiff tramway depot was accidentally hauled up in the air by a trolly, ills arm being so entangled in tbo machinery that it was hapotsibla to extricate it.. A foreman named Pro;ton, who i« a Red’ Cross commandant, realising that the unfortunate man could not live long in that position, improvised a platform high enough to reach the workman, and with only bin Red Cross outfit amputated the. man's arm. The work was done so successfully that when a doctor arrived ho said ho could not have performed the operation better himself in ominary circumstances, and that it undoubtedly saved the workman’s life. Describing the operation, Preston said the first thing ho did was to apply n tourniquet to the workman's arm, and ho then amputated the limb with a pocket knife. To do this ho had to cur, the triceps muscle above the elbow. The workman is now quite well.
