Experiments conducted by the United States Bureau of Entomology demonstrate that the house fly frequently journeys five or six miles in twenty-four hours, which emphasises the sanitary importance of destroying . breeding-places. Some 234,000 flics of various species were dusted with finely-powdered red chalk and released,. baited fly traps were placed at measured intervals dn all directions; thus the flights of different species were determined. The maximum distance travelled by the houso fly was 13.14 miles.
