TRIAL MATCH. Th.o weather was gloriously fine and the ground in good order for tne trial match which urns played on tho Oval in tho presence of a good number of spectators. The “Probables” team (blue) attacked immediately after the initial bully, and Donald had an unsuccessful shot. Good defensive work by tho “ Possibles ” (red) transferred play to the other goal, and Hinton’s shot went wide. A good attack by tho Blues gave Taylor an opportunity, his shot striking tho post. Hewitt then got possession and shot from the edge of the circle, making the' score 1-0 in favor of tho Possibles.” Donald was severely pressed-on several occasions, but. proved a worthy custodian of The “ Probables” goal. M’Donald equalised the score with a good shot, and half-time sounded with no further alteration. In the second half the play became more ragged, and each team scored two more goals, Deal and M’Leod registering for the “ Probables ” and Johnston and Slater for'the “Possibles.” The game was an interesting one, and the issue was always in doubt until the final whistle. Messrs J. Hog" and S. Foote controlled the game in an efficient manner. OTAGO TEAM CHOSEN. The selectors (Messrs W. H. Down, E. S. Wallace, and J. A. Robinson) have chosen the following players to represent Otago in the representative match to be played against South Canterbury in Dunedin on Saturday, August 26 : Goal: Donald (University). Full backs : Les. Ireland and Gillespie (City). . Hahjfs: Comrio, Leonard, Aitken (University). Forwards : Turbott, Bridgman (University), M‘Donald (Oily), M'Killop and M‘Leod (Gymnastic). Emergencies : Hewitt (Gymnastic), Butler (City), Fleet (Gymnastic), Slater, Miller (University). JUNIOR SEVEN-A-SIDE. The junior seven-a-side tournament for the Mollcr Gap was played on the Oval, and Technical College Old Bovs A were, the winners. They came through, the tournament without a goal against them and with five wins and two goals to their credit, making a total of 12 cup points out of a possible of 14. City and University A were runners-up, equal, with 9 cup'points. Gymnastic A, who were expected to put up a good exhibition, were disappointing. Messrs Turbott, Bridgman, Mitford. Dray, and Davidson carried out tho duty of refereeing efficiently. At the end of tho tournament cheers were given for the supervisor, Mr L. J- F. Ireland, for the efficient manner in which he had earned out his duties.

SCHOOLS’ HOCKEY. A practice match for representative honors in defence of the Hatch Cup 'will be played on the Oval at 2.45 on Wednesday. The following are asked to attend Davis, Klee, Ferguson, King, Grey, Reid, Angel, Titchener, Howie, Clark, Brown, Sanderson, Silva, M’Latchie, Hayden, Penman, Marshall, Barron, West, Churchill, Winchester. Cummings, Hines, Austin, Green, Eustace. CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. _ Canterbury met Wellington on the Basin Reserve (Wellington) m dull, fine weather. Numerous alterations weakened the local team considerably, and Canterbury proved to be the slightly superior team. The first fifteen minutes’ play was very even, and both sides were called on to defend the goal line. An exciting tussle took place in front of the Wellington goal, and the ball went into the net. Canterbury continued to be aggressive. Ford scored Canterbury’s second goal. In the second spell Franklin scored for Canterbury and O’Brien for Wellington. The game ended; Canterbury 3 Wellington 1 LADIES’ MATCHES. —A Grade.— Momona 3, Training College No. 22. —B Grade.— Ravensbourne No. 1 3, Technical Old Girls 1. Momona 1, Hearthfire No. 20.

AT OTHER CENTRES

The match for the hockey shield at Auckland between Waikato and Auckland resulted in a draw—3 all.

The match between junior reps, of Wellington and Canterbury for the Zanol trophy gave the Canterbury team victory, 4-0.

In a junior match at Wellington, Wellington beat Nelson, 5-4.
