TRAIN SMASH AVERTED

SURFACEMEN'S DISO9VERY. MAIN TRUNK SUBSIDENCE. [Peu United Press Association.] TAUMARUNUI, July 29. A subsidence of earth under the Main Trunk lino between Waimihu and Porootarao was observed by surfacemen in time to avert a serious train smash. The men noticed that portion of the embankment on the left lino had fallen away, and investigation showed that the subsidence had formed a largo cavo under the lino extending for 35ft back to the hills on the other side of the rails. There was only a depth of 6ft of earth under the line, forming an arch of 6ft or 7ft wide. It is believed that the subsidence was caused by the recent earthquakes. The cavity was immediately packed with boulders, and there was little delay in the service.
