DOMINION DOINGS

At Wanganui yesterday application was made by the Taranaki Dairy Workers’ Union to the Arbitration Court for an award. This is the first application made by the union. The wages asked were £5 weekly. Mr Lyons, for the union, said that tho Southland and Otago awards would bo acceptable as a basis for tho award. He roi eoted the employers’ counterclaims entirely. Mr Bishop, for the employers, pointed out that if the Southland and Otago awards were accepted the union would be getting less than the men wore now receiving. Mr Justice Frazer, after bearing argument, said that the court would not entertain an application for an award in view of tho absence of information) regarding Taranaki conditions. After a long controversy over the site and the expenditure of a considerable sum in levelling and preparing it for the secondary girls’ college at Wellington, tho Board of Governors has been informed_ that the project has been postponed indefinitely. In the present financial position it is considered that tho present buildings are not unsatisfactory. Tho chairman of tho hoard expressed tho opinion that if tho junior high school scheme were proceeded with it was quite likely that they would never see a girls’ college on tho site at all. A case said to be of dominion importance was brought by the Inspector of Awards at Wellington against a factory for not paying wages to certain employees on Anzac Day. It was contended that it was a holy day, not a holiday, and that both the employers and tho employees must go without profit on that day. The Magistrate said ho was of opinion that tho case must bo dismissed, but he would give a written decision. In reference to the possibility of further retrenchments in the Post and Telegraph Service Association the officials have suggested to the Postmaster-General not to replace officers who resign or leave, and so let this wastage effect a reduction of the staff. It is estimated that last year 600 voluntarily left, and it is urged that if recruiting is stopped for six months the present surplusage, stated to be about 280, would disappear. Tho younger men’s department of the Y.M.O.A. had a rally of members in tho association assembly hall last evening to mark the graduation of twenty-three new members from the boys’ division to the younger men’s department. The gathering took the form of a “Yankee Supper,” Mr O. J. Darracott, chairman of tho Younger Men’s Committee, presiding. The tables were tastefully decorated, and a novel feast was served by Miss Powell and the Hearthfiro girls of the Y.W.C.A. Later Mr D. M. Malloch welcomed the guests graduating from the boys’ division, and Mr J. J. Purdie spoke of the significance of the word “ Christian ” in the title of the association. Mr W. E. Crowes led the gathering in some very hearty community singing, and Miss B. Paine contributed a violin solo. Other appreciated items_ were the vocal trio ‘ Hawaiian Melodies ’ by Misses Lilian, Rita, and Ina Clark, song ('Sergeants of the Line ’) Iby Mr George Dunn, and a recitation (‘Johnny Sands’) by Miss Rita Clark. Piano accompaniments were provided by Miss Dorothy B. Clarke and Mr G. Drcwitt.

Two window-smashers, Gns Smith and Daniel Bcriman, were sentenced at Wellington yesterday to six months’ imprisonment. They went into a shop and demanded money, and upon being refused one of them assaulted the occupant. They were ejected, and Smith smashed a window. Bcriman told tho police that he was concerned in it, but as they did not believe him returned to the shop and finished off his comrade’s work.
