Messrs D. A. Do Maus and A. Cable, J.P.s, presided at the Port Chalmers Court this morning. A first offender, who did not appear to answer a charge of drunkenness, was fined the amount o£ his bail (10s). John O’Brien pleaded not guilty to stealing £5 from Robert James Allen. Several men, including Allen, were “ baching,” and O'Brien was asked to share their hospitality until he got work. One of them asked O’Brien down to an hotel for a drink, and O’Brien, returning later to the house, stole the money while Allen was absent. O’Brien was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, with hard labor.
