HAMILTONS SANATORIUM
At tho Health Department’s office last night a meeting was held of the committee appointed by tiro Hospital Hoard that is standing in with the scheme to set up a tuberculosis sanatorium in Central Otago. Present: Mr C. J, Inder (Maniototo), Mr H. M'Kcown (South Canterbury), M. Matheson (Southland), and Dr T. M'Kibbin (representing tiic department). Mr Inder was in tho cliair. Apologies were, received from Dr Valintine and Mr Watt (Ashburton). It was reported that a forward step had! been taken by arranging for the transfer to the joint committee of Mr Reid's and_ Mr Pearce’s properties at Waipiata, comprising together almost the whole, of the plateau on the Hamiltens slopes suitable for building purposes, with about 1,200 acres. As to Dr Byers’s property of about five acres and buildings, tho committee had not come to terms with the vendor, and had finally submitted to him the original offer to bo accepted or refused within fourteen days. It is on tbo same plateau. Tho committee has under offer ample water rights suitable for a sanatorium and for farming. The Public Works Department is to submit an estimate of the cost of repairing the races and doing everything to carry tho water to where it is desired. Mr E, R. Wilson, of Invercargill, is tho committee's architect. As to buildings, the committee must wait to see what are required. All depends upon whether tho purchase of Dr Byers’s property is completed, and whether tho Otago Board comes into the scheme. There aio other boards also away in the northern parts of the South Island that have yet to declare whether they will join in or make arrangements for accommodation in the North Canterbury Sanatorium.
