UNEMPLOYMENT
APPEAL FOR FUNDS. As a result of the recent decision of the Unemployment 'Relief Fund Executive, the mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) Ims now issued tho following:
In making a further appeal for funds, I desire to tender my sincere thanks and appreciation to tho citizens for their generous support of the appeal that I made last year and which enabled tho committee to carry out works beneficial to tho city and maintain a measure of employment for men with dependents. Winter is again upon ns, and without any special effort towards obtaining a record of men unemployed at the present, the city engineer alone has c-ome 300 applicants for work upon his register. Our city social workers also report that many cases of hardship in families exist through breadwinners being out ot ■work. * , ..... For the social welfare and nplntin 0 of the individual in leading_him to maintain his pride of good citizenship it is better to ‘secure his service in work tnau by creating paupers and distributing charity doles towards their maintenance and idleness, which creates a bad influence upon the*children dependents. The Citizens’ Relief Executive has decided that any works put in hand to meet these circumstances will? be designated as relief works, for which the rate of pay will be Is 6d per hour, 01 12s per day. Preference will be given to men with dependents and according to circumstances. It is hoped to be able to utilise a largo proportion of this labor, so far as the city is concerned, upon the foreshore railway deviation works, and several other useful works within the city can also bo arranged for. The commercial travellers’ fund is earmarked, and will' be used only through our social workers. Contributions to the fund at the present time will bo for a twofold naturerelieving distress in our city and improving its commercial facilities throngh putting in hand works which will prove beneficial to tho city. I therefore earnestly appeal to the citizens and organisations for their cooperation and assistance in providing bv contributions to the unemployed fund, which will bo acknowledged from the Town Hall through the daily Press.
