MAY DAY
QUIET ON THE CONTINENT. Pres® Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. PARIS, May 1. Labor Day was passed in Sabbatical calm, except that tho cabmen and businesses of every kind went on absolutely as usual. The giant aeroplane Goliath cruised over tho city watching tho Socialist meetings. Advices from’Mayonce state that May Day celebrants mobbed an American captain’s motor car and mortally wounded him and mauled his chauffeur.— 1 ‘ The Times. ROME, May 1. May Day passed quietly. The shops were closed and no vehicles in the streets. No newspapers were published. —A. and N.Z. Cable. BERLIN, May 1. The .May Day meetings proved a fiasco owing to heavy rain. Tho Government, by a clever ruse, prevented tho interruption of tho public cervices, while satisfying the Labor extremists by offering a holiday, but adding that they would nob be paid, and that it would be part of their annual holiday. Tho result was that there were practically no applications for absence from duty. The school children ■wore also offered a holiday if they brought a letter from their parents. Tho result was that scarcely any of tho parents troubled to write.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
