ANGLICAN SYNOD

CHURCH UNION DISCUSSED. LAMBETH RESOLUTIONS AFFIRMED. [Peb United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 1. At the session of the Anglican Synod, Bishop Julius was congratulated on > the attainment of tho thirty-second anniversary of his consecration. The debate, on Canon James's motion rc tho Biblo in schools was resumed, and progress reported with leave to sit again. The Synod resumed nest the debate on Bifihop Sedgwick's motion -egarding church unity. An amendment by way of addition was proposed by Bishop Avcrill, who moved —“That copies el the _ Lambeth -appeal and resolutions on reunion be cent to the leaders of the Christian churches in New Zealand; that_ those churches be invited to co-operate with tho Anglican Church in prayers, study,_ and conference, with a view to the ultimate realisation of the Lambeth vision ” Another amendment was moved by Canon Wilford (Christchurch) substituting -for the second half of the motion, a clause urging tho clergy and laity of the provinces to use every opportunity to get resolutions passed at conferences, and this great question discussed with members or other Christian bodies. This amendment was seconded by Archdeacon Taylor, who urged caution in associating themselves with resolutions which might chain them to uncertain commitments. Ho particularly warned Synod against any action which would pledge them to promiscuous Interchange of preachers. At a later stage, at Canon Wilford’s request, his amendment was withdrawn, on the ground that it was the subject of misunderita tiding. Bishop Richards, who supported the motion, said”'thal 99 per cent, of the people did not grasp the fact that the differences between the churches were fundamental. They did not want to combine all churches into one big Anglican Church, but wished that the conception of one Catholic Church should be understood. Bishop Sedgwick believed that the great obstacle to unity was failure to grasp what was meant by (he Church of Christ, which was one visible Church of Clod. After further debate the motion, with the- addition laid down in tho amendment, was carried unanimously. Bishop Sedgwick's motion was—“ That the Synod express its thankfulness to Cod .for the great movement made towards unity by (be Lambeth Conference of 1920, and ’ associate itself . with the resolutions passed by the conference on lints great Question."
