OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD
The monthly meeting of tho Ofcsgo Mucation Board’wae commenced thin motb ing, those present being Mcesm J. Wallace (chairman, R. E. Todd, J. Smith, \V. R. Brugh, J. H. Wilkinson, and the, Hon. D. I. Fleming; The board dealt with a lengthy list of applications far subsidies, for minor repairs to school buildings, grounds, and teachers’ residences, and architect’s recommendations respecting repairs. A deputation from the Moray Placs School Committee waited upon the board in respect to the provision of a room in which the children could have lunch.—* Mr Hughson, the chief speaker, Baidi the committee catered for - the children who remained at school for lunch, and had ftn arrangement for the supply of hot cocoa.. An ran and furniture had been provided on the understanding that a room which had been granted! to them in tho rear of the Arts and Crafts building would bo permanently available. The children were comfortable there, and it would boa, pity id shift them. If the committee were deprived of this room the cocoa would have to be supplied in iho shed, and l this was most undesirable from several points of view. Unlike other schools, the Moray Place School had no hall or gymnasium.— Messrs O’Neill, M‘G-j.ll, Miller, and Pa ape also spoke.—After the deputation had withdrawn it was decided' to refer the matter to the chairman and the town member's of tli© board) to mako the best arrangements possible. Tho principal of the Training College applied for forty stools, costing about £lB, and for tlio partitioning off of a part of a room as an office for tho now lecturer (cost, with furniture, _ about £10). —It was decided to make application to the department. In regard to the proposal to fit up tho hall at Beaumont as an additional class room, it was Intimated that tho Hall Committee was prepared to let the building at £7> a month, provided that ite use for school purposes would not interfere with the ordinary night hire of the hall,. Up to 76 per cent, of tho cost of permanent improvements to tho hall necessary for school purposes would bo allowed by the Hall Committee if tho cost did not exceed the total of rant paid by the board during tho term.—The architect estimated the cost of necessary alterations at £BS Bs, and the cost of furniture at £6l 12s—■ total, £ll7. If the building was used by the board for twenty-two months, tho refund allowed by the Hall Committee would be £2l 13s. Tho architect recommendedl acceptance of the committee’s terms, the board to stipulate that the Hall Committee should give an undertaking to allow the removal of the stove, bat racks, and furniture at the end of tho term.— ’Dio report of the architect was adopted, and it was decided to mako application for a grant to tho Public Works Department. The department forwarded. copy of a i proclamation taking about one awe and ai quarter of land at St. Kilda for a school site.—-The Chairman staled that there wae now sufficient land to build ft school on. In. reply to the board’s protest against the withdrawal 1 of capitation by tho department in respect to swimming classes, tho department intimated' that the. posii tion had so far been reconsidered that, in cases where it was shown the classes had real educational value, recognition would not be withheld if sufficient numbers at--1 tended.—The Taranaki and Wanganui Education Boards notified that they had l also protested against the withdrawal of tho capitation.—Tho Secretary said ho thought tho department's letter meant that thn capitation would bo renewed.— Tho Chairman; A kick docs good somelimes.—lt was decided to continue the school classes in the meantime.—Tho State Schools’ Sports Association wrote supportI ing the board's protest against stoppage of j the capitation grant.
