ANZAC MESSAGES

Tho Minister of Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) sent tho following message in connection with Anzac Day ; Minister of Defence, Melbourne,— Members of New Zealand Forces greet thoir comrades of Australia, and aw proud to join them in remembrance of their mutual sacrifice and achievement at Anzac. To General Godley, London.—On this (the seventh) anniversary of Anzac. New Zealand Forces send greetings to their leader of Gallipoli. To General Birdwood. —Now Zealand Forces send kindest remembrances on this the seventh anniversary of Anzac Cove. The following message was received from General Birdwood Heartiest greetings to nil comrades and the people of New Zealand. The memory of those who fell on Anzac Day will never bo forgotten. UNVEH/ING A WAR MEMORIAL. [Peh United Press Association'.] TAUMARUNUT, April 26. 'The first war memorial erected in Taumannuli was unveiled on Anzac Day by General Sir Andrew Russell. The memorial (which was erected by returned soldiers in the district in memory of their fallen comrades) took the form of a wayside cross on a prominent site selected overlooking the Domnin. In the morning General Russell was accorded a civic reception. A combined commemoration sendee followed. The weather, which had been cold and showery in the morning, broke fine in tho afternoon, and a. large crowd of people was present at the unveiling ceremony, at which Captain Boles, D.C.M. (president of the local branch of the R.S.A.), Armychaplain Setton, and General Russell delivered addresses, the general stressing the need for looking after returned men who were in unforunate circumstances and illhealth. A hundred handsome wreaths were placed at the foot of tho memorial after the ceremony, which was- very impressive throughout. From Mr R. S. Black, at present in New Yorlc, the secretary of tho Dunedin R.S.A. lias received the following caifcJo on the occasion of Anzac Day “ Loving greeting to those who returned.
