The Dominion Meteorologist (Mr D. C. Bates) supplied the following at 9 a.m.

Forecast. The Dominion Meteorologist (Mr D. C. Bates, supplied the following at noon to-day :—The indications are for southerly winds, moderate to strong; the weather will probably prove squally and changeable, with scattered rainfall and cold night; barometer rising slowly; rough seas, tides good.

The Breeze is due at Dunedin on Saturday from Lyttelton to load for Lyttelton, Picton, and Wanganui.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Orari is expected to leave Auckland to-morrow for London.

Tho Mahia, en route from Cardiff, is reported as having left Balboa on March 2o for Auckland. " The vessel is expected at the northern port on April 15. and will later load in Now Zealand for London. _ The Canadian Cruiser, which left Napier on Sunday last for New York and ports, tool, the following passengers Miss D. The Union Company advises that the Wailomo was to leave Newcastle, early this week with coal and general cargo for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Timaru. The death occurred last week of Mr R. J. ITartlc, for many years provider superintendent for the Union Company at Auckland. Deceased, who was wdl known on the New Zealand and Australian roasts, recently retired from the company’s, service. The C. and D. Line advises that the Port Bowen was expected at Wellington this morning from Gisborne to complete loading. The vessel will leave Wellington on Sunday for London via Montevideo.

The, Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company advises thht the Cnrint-hie is to leave Bluff on .Saturday for Lvtielton and Wellington to complete loading. The vessel is dne at Wellington on April 4. and will leave there at daybreak on April 11 for Southampton and London via Panama. The Karori is due at Port Chalmers tonight from Westport via polls. She. will discharge part of her coal cargo into hulks, and is expected to come up to Dunedin on Saturday to complete discharge.

A now crew 7 signed on the, Knromiko’s articles, at Port- Chalmers to-dav. The vessel will come up to Dunedin on Saturday to load for Westport. The Kvlebag is due at Dunedin to-mor-row afternoon from Wellington. It is hoped to despatch her to-nv>rrow night for way ports and Wanganui.

The John left Wellington last evening for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due here on Saturday morning, and is listed in sail the same day for Oarnaru, Wellington, and Wanganui.' The Win-galui is due here to-morrow From Auckland via ports. She will sail on Saturday for Bluff, and will return here about Tuesday next to load for East Coast ports and Auckland, The Kahika is oxpccte 1 at Dunedin on Tuesday next from Wellington, and is fixed to sail flip same dav for Nelson and New Plymouth via ports. Advice has been Received by the Union Company that the R.M.S. Niagara arrived at Honolulu on Saturday morning last from Vancouver, and sailed again on Saturday evening for Auckland, Suva, and Sydney. She is due at Auckland on April 7. NEW STEAMER TREBARTHE. The Hains Steamship Company’s cargo steamer Trebartho arrived at Wellington Inst Monday night, coal laden, from Cardiff. The vessel left the Welsh port on February 2 and Colon on February 23. She is a new boat, built in 1920 by J. Rcadhoad and Sons, Ltd., of South Shields. TJIKANDI’S MAIDEN VOYAGE. On. her maiden voyage to Australian, ports, the Holla,nd-Austiulia- Line steamer Tjikandi arrived at Melbourne on March 7 from Rotterdam. Built to the order of the Java-China-Ja-pan Line by Messrs R. Duncan and Co., at Glasgow, and engined by Messrs D. Rowan and Co., the Tjikandi was first commissioned in October, 1921. She is fitted with the latest irnprovtmcnts for the carriage and handling of cargo, and is one of the latest examples of modern ship construction. She has the “goal-post' 1 masts, which are recognised as the most expeditious medium for handling cargo. The Tjikandi has a registered tonnage of 7,983, and is driven by two steam turbines, geared to a single screw shaft. Her 935-h.p. engines are adaptable to oil fuel. The principal dimensions of the steamer are :—Length 449 ft, breadth 58ft, moulded depth 3711.

QUICK-LAUNCHING LIFEBOATS. A demonstration of the Australis davits was given aboard the Commonwealth Government steamer Largs Bay recently. The invention, which is attributed to the late Mr G. J. Phillips, a native of Sydney, permits of two largo nests of lifeboats being launched from one set of davits in an almost incredibly short space of time. Two sets of lifeboats, comprising four boats in all, were launched, and subsequently hoisted aboard again, in remarkably fast time. The is conducted by one man, who, by removing a pin and tripping a lever, releases the davits, which automatically lower the boat’s level with the deck of the steamer, and in a position for loading. When loaded the boats are dropped to the water in about throe seconds, and by the use of a patent winch with which the gear is fitted they are got back- into their original position almost -as quickly as they can be launched. The device, which has been adopted by a number of the greatest shipping lines in the world, has been passed bv the London Board of Trade, and has been fitted to all the Commonwealth Government’s “Bay” class steamers.

THE WAIKOUAITI.

A cablegram was received early _this week which stated that the Waikouaiti hu! sailed from Sydney for Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton. The Union Company announces that the cablegram was incorrect, and that the vessel is expected to leave the. Now South Wales port today. She should roach Bluff on Tuesday and Dunedin on Wednesday or Thursday next.
