PICNIC

The captain, officers, and engineers of the 0. and D. liner Port Bowen, now at Port Chalmers, gave a picnic cm Saturday afternoon in honor of the lady members of the Mercantile Marine Club. This is a branch of the Overseas Club that was formed for the purpose of entertaining the' officers and engineers of the mercantile marine visiting this part. the Mercantile Marine Club entertained _ at a dance last Saturday week, and again on last Wednesday at the Overseas Club, the officers and engineers of the Port Bowen. In order to return this hospitality Captain Beck and his officers chartered the ferry steamer Waireka, which earned the visiters down the harbor. Beforo landing at the Spit afternoon tea was served on board, and after a pleasant stay ashore on the Spit the guests returned on board, where they were regaled with a sumptuous tea. The guests were also entertained on board with dancing, and several elocutionary items were rendered by Mr Do Spong. The Mayor of Dunedin and members of the City Council were amongst the party. On the trip back to Dunedin the mayor and Mr A. E. Usherwood, speaking on behalf of the Mercantile Marine Club, expressed the trunks of all concerned to Captain Beck and his officers for the most enjoyable outing that -had been planned, and Captain Beck, on behalf of his officers, suitably replied. The weather was not all that could be desired, but the Wairoka was comfortably tarpaulined in, and dancing and enjoyment went on as comfortably as if the function had been held in a hall. The picnic was in every way a unique success, and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present.
